How to Lube Mechanical Keyboard Switches (and Not Ruin Them)

A step-by-step guide to lubing linear and tactile switches: which lube to use, how much to apply, and the mistakes that ruin a whole set of switches.

The most common first complaint from someone who just bought their first “real” board: is the scratchiness normal? Yes, almost always. Learning how to lube mechanical keyboard switches is the mod that removes it, and on dry stock switches two or three hours of careful brush work turns something scratchy and tinny into something that sounds and feels genuinely satisfying. But done wrong, it kills the tactility you paid for or introduces a sluggishness that is worse than stock.

This guide covers the complete process: whether you should bother at all, what to buy, how to open and lube each component correctly by switch type, and which mistakes are worth understanding before you touch your first switch.

Should you even do this?

The honest answer for a lot of people is: probably not yet.

A factory-lubed label does not specify the lubricant, coverage, or consistency of every switch. Check the manufacturer’s description of your exact variant before adding anything. Re-lubing is optional; an already satisfactory switch needs no extra treatment.

Hand-lube if you enjoy meticulous handwork, you own dry (unlubed) switches already, or you want to learn the skill on a small batch before committing. What lube actually does

Lube is a thin film of grease on a switch’s moving plastic surfaces. It reduces friction between stem and housing, which removes scratch (the gritty feeling and high-frequency sound of plastic dragging on plastic) and slightly deepens the sound by damping vibration.

It does not make a bad switch good, change actuation force meaningfully, or fix tactility problems. On tactile switches, over-lubing the stem legs rounds off and weakens the bump, which is the classic beginner mistake. Linears tolerate generous lube; tactiles need a lighter, more selective hand.

Prepare the switches and tools

Set out a switch opener matched to the housing clips, a fine brush, tweezers, a parts tray, and your chosen lubricant. Disconnect the keyboard before removing keycaps or switches. A hot-swap socket allows removal with a switch puller; a soldered switch must be desoldered first. Do not pull against a solder joint.

Following Omnitype’s preparation and application guide, start with a small batch. Keep each switch’s housing, stem, and spring together. Hold stems by their keycap mount so your fingers do not wipe lubricant off the sliding surfaces. Wipe excess lubricant from the brush onto the container rim before touching a part; a visible sheen is the goal, not a bead.

Keep an untouched switch beside the batch as a reference. Finish and reassemble one switch before opening the rest, so a mistake in coverage or orientation does not get repeated across the whole board.

Step-by-Step: Opening and Lubing Each Component

Work in batches of 10 to 15 switches and keep components grouped so top and bottom housings stay matched.

1. Open the switch. Align the switch in the opener and press down until you hear the housing clips release. You’ll separate into four parts: top housing, bottom housing, stem, and spring. Keep them together on the palette — mixing stems between housings is not a problem technically, but it slows you down.

2. Lube the bottom housing rails. The two vertical channels inside the bottom housing are where the stem slides on every keystroke. Dip your brush lightly — it should look barely wet, not loaded — and run one thin stroke up each rail. Resist going back for a second pass. The instinct to apply more is where most over-lubing starts.

3. Lube the spring. Apply a light coating with your brush. If using an oil suitable for springs, the bag method can coat a batch separately: use a small amount, distribute it, and check for pooled lubricant before reassembly. Keep stems and housings out of that bag.

4. Lube the stem. This step differs by switch type. For linears: paint the four outer walls of the stem (front, back, left side, right side) with a single stroke each. Add a light coat to the center pole. For tactiles: do the same on the walls and center pole, but leave the stem legs completely bare. Those two small nubs on the underside of the stem are what produce the bump — lubricant there can change the bump. Keep the metal contact leaf clean.

5. Lube the top housing (optional). A thin swipe along the inner contact rails of the top housing adds marginal additional smoothness and can slightly deepen the sound profile. For tactile switches, skip this or apply a minimal coat.

6. Reassemble and press-test. Clip the housing together, confirm the snap, and test each switch by feel before reinstalling. A properly-lubed linear should have no grit anywhere in the downstroke and a clean, consistent return.

Brush vs bag lubing

Brush application lets you choose which surfaces receive lubricant. Use it for stems and housings, especially when tactile legs need to stay bare. Spring-only bag lubing is a separate shortcut: it spreads lubricant around loose springs before reassembly. It does not eliminate the need to open the switch.

Do not bag-lube a complete assembled switch or spray lubricant through its stem opening. Neither method gives control over where the lubricant goes. If the problem is intermittent registration rather than friction, use the keyboard troubleshooting guide before adding lubricant.

Check films and springs while the switch is open

Films and replacement springs address different problems from lubrication. Make one change at a time so you can identify which step changed the result.

A switch film sits between the housing halves. Follow the TX film installation instructions for orientation and compatibility. Check that the housing clips close fully and the stem returns freely after fitting one. A film is an optional fit adjustment, not a required stage of every lube job; do not force one into a housing that will not close.

A spring swap changes the force required through the stroke. Compare like-for-like specifications: Kinetic Labs’ long springs, for example, are sold by bottom-out weight, which is not an actuation-force rating. Keep the original spring, verify the replacement fits your switch, and check return with a keycap installed. If the existing weight suits you, leave the spring alone.

Finish these checks on one sample before treating a batch. A switch that binds after a film or spring change needs that change reviewed before you add more lubricant.

Realistic time and outcome

Budget roughly 2–4 hours for a full 87-key board, more the first time. On linears the result is a noticeably smoother keystroke and a slightly cleaner, deeper sound. On tactiles done carefully, a smoother surrounding stroke with the bump preserved. It is a real improvement. It is not the night-and-day transformation some videos imply.

If you want the biggest sound and feel gains for the least effort, hand-lubing is not where they are. Tuned stabilizers and good PBT keycaps deliver more, faster. Hand-lubing is a refinement for people who enjoy the process and have already made the high-leverage changes.

What Over-Lubing Actually Costs You

On linears, over-lubing produces a syrupy feel — smooth in a way that starts to feel wrong after long typing sessions. On tactiles, lubing the legs removes the bump that justified buying the switch. Reopen the affected switch and remove excess lubricant with a clean brush or lint-free material. Follow the switch and lubricant makers’ cleaning guidance; do not assume alcohol dissolves the grease or is safe for every component.

The other frequent error: treating a rattle as a switch problem when it’s a stabilizer problem. Lubing the click mechanism on a clicky switch or going heavy on a tactile stem because something sounds off almost always makes things worse. Isolate the noise source first — press each key individually, note which key rattles, and check whether removing the keycap removes the rattle. For anyone who puts in long sessions at a keyboard, switch feel isn’t trivial. It is ergonomics measured over accumulated keystrokes, and lubing is the cheapest change that moves it.

When to revisit a lubed switch

Use a specific symptom as the reason to inspect a switch, rather than a fixed re-lubing calendar. If return becomes sluggish, check for excess lubricant or incorrect assembly. Where exactly do you lube a keyboard switch?

On a tactile switch the two stem legs stay completely bare, because grease there flattens the bump and turns a tactile switch into a mushy linear. Do you have to lube mechanical keyboard switches?

No. Lubing is an optional refinement, not maintenance, and a modern switch works indefinitely without it. It is worth the hours when a linear sounds scratchy, when spring ping is audible, or when you are already building a board with the switches out. Factory-lubed switches, silent switches and most magnetic switches gain the least, so start by listening to what the board actually sounds like rather than lubing on principle. Magnetic switches still have moving plastic parts; follow their manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming this contact-switch procedure applies.

How much lube does one switch need?

Far less than instinct suggests: a thin, even film that changes how the surface reflects light rather than a visible bead. A single 3 g or 5 g tub covers a full keyboard with room to spare, and the most common beginner mistake is applying enough that the stem drags. Over-lubing a tactile switch kills the bump, over-lubing a linear makes it feel sluggish, and both are far harder to correct than they are to avoid.

Can you lube switches without opening them?

Not properly. Every workable method starts with the switch open: even bag lubing shakes loose stems or springs with lube, which is a shortcut on disassembly, not a way around it. Squeezing lube through the top of an assembled switch spreads it unpredictably and risks reaching the contact leaf, which can cause intermittent registration. Switches must come off the board and come apart, which is why hot-swap sockets make the job far easier than a soldered PCB.
